Windows Explorer is a file manager application that is included with releases of the Microsoft Windows operating system from Windows 95 onwards.  One of the features is Folder options that enables you to customize the way you view files and folders on your computer. This is a valuable setting if you find it frustrating each time you open My Documents or a personal folder that you have created and the view is not “your usual” view.

Folder Options

The folder option setting can be set to view all your files and folders in the same format. Each time you open your filing system the view remains the same until you change it.  The other difference is changing your view on the toolbar while browsing, which is enabled for that time only.  When you close or shut down your computer it reverts to the default setting you chose. The settings are, Extra large Icons, Large Icons, Medium Icons, Small Icons, List, Details, Tiles.

Change the Setting

  • Open Explorer (Windows Explorer), the Explore window opens.
  • Click Tools on the menu bar, click  Folder options from the drop-down menu list.
  • The Folder options dialogue box opens, select the View Tab.
  • Under the heading Folder View, click Apply to Folders button.

Note: These are general settings and may vary depending on the operating system you are using.

Tip: Folder Options settings do not apply to the folder toolbars.

This feature will give you more control of your computer.  Happy browsing!
